Bryan Washington could very well be the voice of the generation.

His debut story collection Lot was one of the best books of 2019 and got recognized by President Barrack Obama as one of his favorite released of the year. Washington was also named a 5 Under 35 honoree by the National Book Foundation. Washington’s 2019 was the type of year writer’s dream about having.

Somehow, Washington’s 2020 was even better.

His first novel Memorial is a dramady about an interracial couple seeking out what home means to them. The book, which he though might appeal to 9 people, is one of the most talked about books of the year and is already landing on Best Of 2020 lists and has been long- and shortlisted for numerous awards.

Adam Vitcavage is joined by Bryan Washington to discuss his first novel, Memorial. The two discuss life after his 2019 award-winning story collection Lot, cooking lessons, and how his interests shaped his book even if he thought only 9 people would read it.
